The photo above is of the beginning of a new day, golden sunlight bearing the hope and promise that a new day brings.August has been a busy month. This past weekend my wife and I moved the last of three kids off to college for the year. No, not the last in a series; we moved three kids to college this year. They’re there at the same time. One has decided to pick up his education where he left off a couple of years ago. One is beginning graduate school. Another has transferred schools to begin work on a new major. (I have a Paypal account in case you’re interested in making a donation to the “Help James Keep Buying Film, Filters and a Couple of Lenses He’d Really, Really Like Fund.”)
So it’s new beginnings for our kids, but also new beginnings for my wife and I as the nest stays empty for longer stretches of time.
It’s a new day.

Ghone, I shoot film and I don't keep very detailed notes (Confession: I actually don't take notes while shooting). Here's what I remember about this shot: I metered on the grass in the foreground and used a 2-stop graduated neutral density filter to darken the sky. Scanned the film; then in PhotoShop, I selected areas for levels adjustments and increased overall color saturation.
