While we've got your attention ...

Since motorists aren't doing much of anything in rural Tennessee except sitting at the stop sign waiting for non-traffic to clear, enterprising local politicians and entrepreneurs take advantage of the situation by strategically placing advertisements for themselves.

"Hey, it's that Haggard guy on this ballot! I remember his sign over at the tee on Asbury Road. I'm votin' for him!"

"Reminds me I got to get my stumps ground. Better call S&J."

But don't stare too long or you'll wreck!

Nice photo. People's use and placement of those little election signs can often provide some interesting insight into social relations, for better or for worse...

  4. dlm, there are a few of us around. Try searching for Elgin, IL or Dundee IL at Technorati.com - you'll probably find quite a few more.

Glenn, I was fully stopped when I took that photos through my car's windshield. Thanks for the safety tip!

Lily, it's true. Some corners had more than a dozen signs. Really increases the chance of a car wreck trying to read them all. Did those people really think someone could take them all in at once?

  5. empress, I used to work for a printer who contracted to print political yard signs. One of the requirements (in Michigan at the time) was to be a union shop and print our union logo in the lower right corner of all signs. Only problem was, we weren't a union shop. The owners swiped somebody else's sign and copied the union logo so we could be in compliance. Maybe I should send this to Post Secret. On the back of a political sign.
